Tropical Inspiration

I was feeling like I needed a little inspiration for Spring and ever since I found out about the Marsh Botanical Gardens last year, I’ve wanted to go.  It seemed like the perfect day to do it, so why not?  We popped in and out of all the greenhouses we could, toured the campus and ended the day at the beach (which is only about seven miles away!).  By the end of the day, my crazy plant lady vibes were back in full bloom, just in time for Spring!

Many of the greenhouses had smaller rooms inside which created a cozy tropical experience

Some of the plants were so tall, it looked like they needed to raise the roof

There are plenty of petals too!

6 Easy Ways to a more Sustainable Life

Since it’s World’s Ocean Day, (Happy World’s Ocean Day!) I wanted to share my 6 easy ways to a sustainable life and what we can do to help keep our ocean clean.  There are so many ways to help keep our largest body of water blue and sparkling.  And P.S. they are also really easy!  You might already be doing some of these sustainable living techniques and not even know it.  Scroll down to read more:

6 Easy Ways to a Sustainable Life

Metal Straws with Carrying Case via Sur La Table

Reusable Straws :  You’ve probably been hearing a lot about this in the news lately.  There’s a trend on saying no to plastic straws at restaurants and bbqs.  Instead you can opt for a reusable metal straw that’s not only sleek and stylish but good for the environment.

Anchor Ring in the Nautical Wheeler Jewelry shop

Recycled Metals :  Jewelry made from recycled metals like Sterling silver or gold is another great way to help keep our oceans (and air!) clean.  The use of recycled metal means less greenhouse gasses and a smaller carbon footprint.

6 Easy Ways to a Sustainable Life

Reusable bags from Whole Foods Market

Reusable Grocery Bags :  If you haven’t jumped on this trend yet, now’s the time!  Plastics are one of the biggest polluters of our oceans and a really easy way to have a cleaner ocean is to simply use less plastic.  I love these reusable bags from Whole Foods.  Not only are they really durable but they’re also insulted to help keep my groceries chilled on the ride home.

Meatless Mondays :  Eating a more sustainable diet is not only good for you but for the environment as well!  Sustaining from animal products like meat and dairy, if only for one day a week, help to keep agriculture run-off from polluting our oceans.

6 Easy Ways to a Sustainable Life

100% Organic Cotton Sweatshirt from PACT – I own this and absolutely love it!

100% Cotton :  I love 100% cotton clothing.  I have sensitive skin and often times my skin will get irritated from synthetic materials woven into a shirt or pair of pants.  Not only does wearing 100% cotton clothing keep my skin happy but it also helps to keep the ocean clean.  When we wash clothes that have synthetic materials in it, like polyester or viscose, tiny pieces of these plastic fabrics break off and drain out our washing machines only to end up in our oceans.

6 Easy Ways to a Sustainable Life

Ocean Salt Face and Body Scrub from Lush

Sea Salt Scrubs :  Opting for sea salt scrubs instead of body or facial scrubs that contain those small plastic beads is an easy way to green-up your beauty routine.  Micro plastics are wreaking havoc on our oceans because they are so small it’s hard to remove them from the water.  Many are ending up in the bellies of sea creatures like whales and fish since they don’t know any better.  Can you imagine having a belly full of plastic?  Yuck!

Wanderlust – Glow Worm Caves of New Zealand

How amazing are these glow worm caves?!  Located in New Zealand, these mineral rich caves attract illuminating creatures like glow worms in large numbers.  The glow worms suspend from the cave formations creating a dazzling ceiling.  You enter the caves on the upper level by foot and take a boat the rest of the wave through.  I think these caves are a stunning example of the hidden beauty that surrounds us!

Wanderlust : Chefchaouen, Morocco

Hidden inside Morocco’s Rif Mountains is a beautiful city filled with stunning shades of blue.  Chefchaouen, pronounced (‘Shef-sha-wan’) also known as the “Blue Pearl”, a reference to the blue buildings that fill the city.  Take a look!
